Boğaziçi University (Turkish: Boğaziçi Üniversitesi) is one of the most prominent educational institutions in Turkey. The university is located on the European side of the Bosphorus in Istanbul (hence the name, which means 'Bosphorus University'). The institution currently known as Boğaziçi University was established in 1971 on the campus of Robert College, which, in turn, was established in 1863 as the first American school outside of the United States.

Research Overview

The Electrical and Electronic Engineering department of Boğaziçi University carries out high quality research in three major specialization areas; namely, Electronics and Microsystems, Signal Processing and Telecommunications, and Systems and Control. There are about 70 MS students and 50 PhD students working with 25 faculty members on various research projects.

All faculty members are associated with one or more research laboratories some of which are multidisciplinary and span two or more specialization areas and sometimes departments. The nine research labs currently in operation are: BETA (Boğaziçi University Electronic Design Research Lab), BUSIM (Boğaziçi University Signal and Image Processing Lab), BUMEMS (Boğaziçi University Micro-Electromechanical Systems Research Lab), Mechatronics Lab, LAL (Lung Acoustics Lab), ISL (Intelligent Systems Lab), BUICS (Boğaziçi University Information and Communication Security LAB), WCL (Wireless Communications Lab), VAVlab (Volumetric Analysis and Visualization Group), and Nonlinear Dynamics and Chaos Lab. As one can deduce from the research laboratory list above, research in our department is carried out in various areas ranging from IC design to MEMS design and fabrication, from signal and image processing to mechatronics and process automation, from intelligent system design to communication theory, from biomedical applications to multi-media.

Each lab is funded by its own means. Various funds are available in the department and are actively used. These are, Boğaziçi University Research Fund (BAP), Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TUBITAK) research projects, State Planning Orgaization (DPT) projects, European projects, and industrial projects.


The Electrical and Electronics Engineering Department of Bogazici University (BUEE) has stated its educational mission as to provide its studentswith an excellent undergraduate education to prepare them for successful professional careers in the international arena, as well as for the top-rating graduate schools. Our research mission is to carry out world-class research in selected areas of electrical and electronics engineering.

BUEE currently has 25 faculty members, 22 teaching assistants, and several technical staff serving around 300 undergraduate students. The undergraduate program consists of four years, the freshman year mainly being devoted to basic sciences and humanities in order to provide a firm background for the future engineering education. The second year is designed to introduce the students to electrical engineering as well as continue the background building. The junior year introduces fundamental areas of electrical and electronics engineering to the students and conveys basic engineering notions. The senior year is very flexible. The students can choose between four areas of specialization; namely, telecommunications and signal processing, control systems, electronics, and solid state. Senior students are expected to take required and elective courses from their selected specialization option to build up depth and breadth of knowledge. It is our belief that in a fast progressing field such as ours, the education must stress fundamentals of the profession, leaving the ever-changing details to the student as well as providing the student with a life-long learning perspective. The student will complete his undergraduate education at BUEE with a capstone design project to which he/she applies most of the concepts learned throughout the four years.

Our undergraduate program also stresses industrial experience, whereby all students are expected to do a practical training of 60 days in the industry. This training is intended to give the student an awareness of the industrial world. Furthermore, for those students who are more inclined towards basic sciences, double major programs with Physics or Mathematics are offered. The quality of our undergraduate education has been accredited by ABET.

We believe that a competitive undergraduate education cannot be achieved without having faculty actively conducting research. Together with around 100 MS and 50 PhD students, our 25 faculty members carry out research in various areas. Our department currently has 9 research labs, ranging from IC design to security, from signal and image processing to mechatronics, from intelligent systems to wireless communication. Members of our faculty are leading or participating in national and international projects and research networks, publishing in prestigious international journals and holding positions in scientific organizations. Most of the 150 graduate students are funded through various research grants, both national and international.
